How to have an Injury Free Holiday Season!

I am just as excited (and slightly stressed) as the rest of you when it comes to the holidays. I love the decorations, the traditions, the big meals, etc. Injury prevention during the fall season is important. We are lucky to live on Kauai. We don’t get snowstorms here. However, with this fall season comes the seasonal chores (putting up decorations, sweeping up leaves off our lanais, bringing home the heavy frozen turkey). At Kauai Therapy & Wellness, we see an increase in the number of injuries associated with the holidays. The good news is, if you are reading this, there is an excellent chance you live on Kauai, which means: NO SNOW to shovel. We have come to find out that most of these seasonal injuries can be prevented so that we can enjoy what really matters this season: being healthy & happy with our family & friends.

Injury prevention during the fall season is important. Here are some tips:
Save your lower back by lifting with the larger muscles of the legs. Avoid using the smaller muscles of the low back.
While you are cleaning up leaves, use the power of your legs by pulling the rake to your body. You want to avoid bending & straining your lower back.
Do NOT twist & bend together. This is likely to cause injury.
When picking up large, heavy, or bulky items (like the Christmas Tree), bend your legs in a squat like fashion & then straighten them to lift. It is important to keep the object as close to your body as possible and avoid holding objects at arms length as it over stresses the spine.
Don’t forget to stretch your spine before, during and after activity. Avoid prolonged positioning.
Be sure to warm up and stretch before you perform strenuous activity.

Even if you have had Physical, Occupational, or Speech Therapy in the past, call us at (808)333-3688. Many of you who have co-pays, co-insurance or deductibles associated with your Physical Therapy treatment may not have a financial obligation. Often by this time of the year out of pocket maximums and deductible have been met. This translates into NO COST or little out of pocket in most cases. Our insurance experts can check your Physical Therapy benefits for you. If you have Medicare, you are allowed a certain amount of Physical Therapy each and every calender year. Many don’t know: If you don’t use it, you lose it. On January 1st, the amount allowed to you for Physical Therapy through Medicare automatically renews. Take advantage of using what is medically allowed.

Our revolutionary treatments don’t wear off like many traditional forms of Physical Therapy treatments. If you don’t re-injure the area, your painful condition will NOT return.  While you are at Kauai Therapy & Wellness YOU are our TOP priority. Safety 1st! Don’t Risk Injury!!
Something as simple as sweeping leaves can contribute to severe neck pain & low back pain. As with any repetitive movement, you are placing yourself at risk for injury. Please remember to ease into seasonal work and play activities to decrease the risk of injury. Many fall seasonal yard work tasks may involve bending & twisting at the neck, mid back and low back. The twisting and bending of your spine is not necessary. Injury prevention during the fall season is important, here are some ways we can promote a happy and healthy ‘you’:

A. Body Work.

We will assess your body and perform an as needed ‘tune-up’. You tune-up your car and give your car regular maintenance…why not do the same for your body? You only have one body. Your Therapist at Kauai Therapy & Wellness will assist you with an individualized assessment and find muscle imbalances which may make you more susceptible to hurting yourself as we get closer to the holidays. The last thing you need is to suffer through the holiday season.

B. Teach you the ideal way to warm up & get ready by stretching prior to activity.

C. Teach you how to: lift, pull, bend, etc. to promote injury prevention.

D. Teach you the best way to make your body strong and resistant to injury.
