WHEN SCIATICA STRIKES!

If you are affected by sciatica, you will already know how debilitating the pain and discomfort can be and how unexpectedly it can arrive, whether you’re sitting, standing, moving… even when your sleeping!

Aloha Sandpoint/Ponderay!

There is nothing worse than unexpected sharp pain when reaching out a certain way.. it can almost make you want to drop to your knees.

It can ruin your night…. making it impossible to sleep…. and whats worse, you wake up cranky, making your day just miserable.

It can stop you from enjoying daily simple tasks.. making you frustrated.. forcing you to take more pain pills then you would care to admit.

Top 3 Causes Why Your Back Pain is Screaming For Help!

Cause #1 is Herniated Disc. A herniated disc refers to a problem with one or more of the rubbery cushions (discs) between the individual bones (vertebrae) that make up your spine. This may result in pain, numbness or weakness in your arm or leg.

Symptoms of herniated disc(s) may include pain when bending forward, increased pain with sitting/driving, pain that travels from the back down the leg, and pain relief when bending backwards.

Pain may be described as tingling, numbness, burning sensation down the leg.

Cause #2 is Arthritis, Degenerative Disc Disease, Stenosis. This is the narrowing of the open spaces within your spine to your arms and legs.

Spinal Stenosis occurs most often the lower back and neck and can sometimes occur with no signs or symptoms. However, symptomatic pain from spinal stenosis can be described as tingling, numbness, burning sensation, muscle weakness, and problems with normal bladder and bowel function.

Symptoms of spinal stenosis may include pain with long periods of standing and walking and pain that comes on with standing and walking and relief from sitting.

Cause #3 is SI Joint/Pelvic Dysfunction. This is the inflammation of one or both of your sacroiliac joints- situated where your lower spine and pelvis connects. Sacroiliitis can cause pain in your buttocks or lower back, and can extend down one or both legs. Prolong standing or stair climbing can worsen the pain.

Sacroiliitis can be difficult to diagnose, because it can be mistaken for other causes of lower back pain. Its been linked to a group of diseases that cause inflammatory arthritis of the spine. Causes of SI Joint/Pelvic Dysfunction can come from trauma, fall, landing on your bottom, contact sports, or pregnancy (both before and after birth). Symptoms include pain with sitting, getting in/out of the car, pelvis, buttocks, hip and/or groin pain. Pain can also occur rolling over in bed, which can disturb sleeping patterns.  Chronic SI Joint pain symptoms can make it difficult to perform common daily tasks, and can affect every aspect of your life.
