Scar Care & Lymphatic Drainage After Surgery

After surgery, most people focus on the incision finally closing. But true healing happens underneath the skin. Scar tissue can become tight, painful, or restrict movement, and swelling can linger for months if the lymphatic system isn’t supported. Proper scar care and gentle lymphatic drainage helps the body heal faster, move better, and feel more comfortable in everyday life.

Why scar care is important

When scar tissue forms, it can “stick” to the layers underneath: muscles, fascia, and even nerves. This can lead to:

  • Stiffness or pulling when you move
  • Numbness, tingling, or sensitivity around the scar
  • Limited motion in nearby joints
  • Pain that lasts long after the incision looks healed

Early guidance from a therapist helps keep the tissue flexible and mobile so it doesn’t become restrictive later.

What lymphatic drainage does

After surgery, swelling is normal; but if it doesn’t move, it can delay healing. Lymphatic drainage is a gentle technique that helps reduce fluid buildup, improve circulation, and support the immune system. It’s especially helpful for:

  • Hip or knee replacements
  • Breast cancer / mastectomy recovery
  • C-section or abdominal surgery
  • Ankle / foot injuries and fractures

Simple things you can do at home

Gentle touch or skin stretching (once cleared by your doctor/therapist)

Staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged stillness

Light movement to help fluid return toward the lymph nodes

Avoiding heavy pressure or deep massage early on (this can cause more inflammation)

Guided Recovery for a Smoother Healing Process

Proper scar care and lymphatic support should be guided by a licensed therapist — especially after surgery. Seeing a PT/OT/MT early ensures swelling is managed safely, scar tissue doesn’t become stiff or stuck, and mobility returns the right way. This protects the incision, prevents long-term tightness, and speeds up recovery.
