What does rehabilitation after surgery look like?
As a team we look to address your areas of need from safety concerns, equipment needs, pain management, home exercise programs, to in-clinic programs. Our goal is to re-establish joint motion, muscle strength, and return you to your prior level of function.
Total Knee Replacement Precautions
• Weight bearing as tolerated
• Compression stocking (TED hose) must be worn until patient exhibits normal, independent gait
• TED hose may be removed at night
• Ambulation with walker unless specified by a physician
• Stair use – “up with the good, down with the bad”
• Range of motion goals
• Maintain FULL extension during week one
• Do not rest at home with pillows under the knee

Total Hip Replacement Precautions
- No Strenuous external rotation and extension.
- Ice and elevate your surgical leg following PT sessions.
- Compression socks (TED hose) must be worn until the patient exhibits normal, independent gait.
- TED hose may be removed at night.
- Ambulation with walker on flat surfaces, no weight bearing restrictions unless specified by physician.
- Walker use is about 2 weeks with transition to cane.
- Ascend stairs leading with non surgical leg.
- Descend stairs leading with surgical leg
