Yoga Classes – Make Sure You are In the Right Place!
When most people hear the term “yoga”, what comes to mind is a series of difficult poses that require immense strength and flexibility. This perception of yoga can be intimidating for those wishing to begin taking yoga classes – and for good reason. It is unrealistic to expect yourself to immediately be able to achieve these challenging yoga poses. Unfortunately, many people’s first experience with yoga classes are at a large gym or neighborhood center. If you are a newcomer, it is easy to get lost in these large yoga classes. More importantly, it is easy to be overlooked. This can result in incorrect form, or perhaps lead you to attempt poses that are not in line with your level of ability at the time and often times results in injury.
Why does this matter so much? If you are not using correct form during your yoga classes, you are likely not getting the maximum benefit. You may even injure yourself, especially if you try to attempt difficult poses just because everyone else in the class is doing it. It is important to remember that everyone is at a different level based on the length of time they have been practicing yoga as well as their overall fitness level and flexibility.
This is not to say, however, that taking yoga classes at a large gym is a bad thing. These classes can be highly enjoyable and challenging. But one thing you owe yourself is a proper foundation in yoga to ensure your safety and reap the maximum benefit from your practice. At Kauai Therapy & Wellness we offer yoga classes that cover basic principles, proper form, and offer personalized practice.
