Overview

Distal Radius Fracture Colles, Smith Fractures

These fractures can be caused by a fall on an outstretched arm or a direct blow. Common symptoms include pain, tenderness, or deformity. To rule out a fracture, X-rays can be used.

The treatment of a fracture is called “closed reduction”, in which the bones can be moved back into their proper alignment.

Open reduction is often used if the bones are not able to be moved into the correct position manually. These bones may be surgically placed next to one another and may be wired, pinned, or screwed together.

Early intervention/rehabilitation is helpful to reduce pain, increase range of motion, and ultimately restore strength and function. To ensure optimal healing, custom splints and wrist supports are recommended.
