The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is a crucial ligament located within the knee that interlocks with the Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) between the thigh and shin bone. The ACL provides stability to the leg, particularly during knee extension and rotational movements.
Tears of the ACL have become prevalent in young athletes, particularly in female soccer and basketball players. Female athletes are at a 4-6 times higher risk for non-contact ACL tears compared to their male counterparts. Research indicates that 1 in 4 athletes who suffer an ACL injury will experience a subsequent injury.
Studies have demonstrated that implementing an ACL injury prevention exercise program in young female athletes can reduce the risk of non-contact ACL tears by 75%. Additionally, the use of foot orthotics has been shown to decrease the risk of non-contact ACL injury by 77%.
Not only do we treat ACL injuries but we offer a special program on how to prevent ACL injuries from occurring.
This program is essential for athletes in the following sports:
Our program emphasizes injury awareness, avoidance techniques, stretching, strengthening, plyometric, and neuromuscular coordination exercises to help reduce ACL injuries. Even if you have participated in other ACL injury prevention programs, or have already had an ACL injury or surgery, this program is for you. We focus on the root causes of ACL injuries, not merely giving you a generalized menu of exercises. This results in a more comprehensive prevention approach and is highly effective in reducing the incidence of injuries. Our advanced techniques, and systems will promote durability, and lessen the likelihood of an ACL injury.
Benefits of the ACL Injury Prevention Program:
- Learn how to avoid future problems
- Improve athletic performance.
- Increase flexibility & movement.
- Improve coordination.
- See immediate results within one week.
How long before benefits are realized?
Most people report feeling improvement within one week, but to achieve your physical peak, and truly prevent ACL injury with the program, you must be committed to the program for 90 days.
Our ACL Screening Process
The specialists at Synergy Physical Therapy and Wellness has designed a program that focuses on reducing the risk of ACL injuries and enhancing an athlete’s athletic performance. The program is based on our in-depth research that has linked certain movement patterns to ACL injury risk.
Our team of licensed sports physical therapists, athletic trainers, and certified strength and conditioning specialists collaborate to address the specific weaknesses of each athlete. They use a combination of cutting-edge research, clinical expertise, and evidence-based training techniques to enhance jumping mechanics and proprioception (awareness of body position).
The program encompasses three primary areas:
Screening: We use the most reliable, practical, and valid screening tools to determine which athletes may be at risk of ACL injury.
Prescription: Our licensed physical therapist will prescribe targeted training techniques to address any neuromuscular deficiencies in individual athletes.
Enhancing: We build athletic performance while reducing the risk of serious knee injuries such as ACL tears through the use of effective training methods in a group or team environment.
