Slipped Disk Myths on Disk Herniation

Slipped disk myths on herniation

Your body is composed of millions of cells, each serving a unique function, from your skeletal structure to your skin, showcasing an intelligent and resilient design. Despite this, many people frequently use phrases like “my back is thrown out,” “I must have a rib out,” or “I have a slipped disc.” While these expressions are common, they reflect misunderstandings about how strong and adaptable our bodies truly are. To shift to a more accurate perception of our physical resilience, we need to eliminate these misconceptions.

Take the phrase “slipped disc” as an example..

Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a slipped disc. The spine is designed to be robust, able to withstand and transmit forces from the ground up and from the top down. Spinal discs act as shock absorbers, filled mostly with fluid, and are crucial for spinal function. These discs are securely enclosed between the vertebrae, akin to a patty between two buns, with ligaments acting as a wrapper that prevents the disc from slipping out. Given this structure, it is anatomically incorrect to say that discs can slip. However, discs can herniate or bulge, pressing against nerves and causing pain, which is a different issue altogether.

Our bodies are designed to adapt and improve in response to physical demands.

This adaptability is evident in individuals who exercise regularly, as their bodies become stronger and more efficient over time. Conversely, a lack of physical activity leads to weakening and a lack of positive adaptation. Thus, to maintain and enhance our physical state, it is essential to engage in regular physical activities like lifting weights, running, walking, doing Pilates, practicing yoga, or participating in recreational sports. These activities not only improve physical health but also demonstrate the remarkable capabilities of our bodies. So, challenge yourself, stay active, and discover the full potential of your body.
